DGNSS Cooperative Positioning in Mobile Smart Devices: A Proof of Concept

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) constitutes the foremost provider for geo-localization in a growing number of consumer-grade applications and services supporting urban mobility. Therefore, low-cost ultra-low-cost, embedded GNSS receivers have become ubiquitous mobile devices such as smartphones consumer electronics to large extent. However, limited sky visibility multipath scattering induced areas hinder positioning navigation capabilities, thus threatening quality position estimates. This work leverages availability raw measurements ultra-low-cost smartphone chipsets connectivity provided by modern, low-latency network infrastructures enable Cooperative Positioning (CP) framework. A Proof Of Concept is presented that aims at demonstratingdesigned demonstrate feasibility GNSS-only CP among networked embedding ultra-low-costequipped with receivers. The test campaign this study assessed client-serverthe approach over 4 G/LTE connectivity. Results demonstrated an overall service above 80%, average accuracy improvement 40% w.r.t. standalone solution.
